If you are a creative and talented writer, why would you want to waste that on writing for a creativity-strangling corporation? Here's your problem. This Forgotten Realms novel you hope to write might get you a publishing deal with Wizards of the Coast, but that novel will not likely ever see the light of day. Wizards has plans for the setting and the novels they publish conform to them, which means that unless you have some inside information on their plans, your novel will not be what they are looking for.

Also, the whole keeping things on the down low bit? Yeah, there is nothing to worry about. Writers just getting started have this overwhelming fear that someone is going to come along and steal your idea, but the truth is that your idea is unlikely to be original and your writing, especially if you are only just now starting to write seriously, is not the quality that anyone would seek to steal. You need a circle of people that you know will be critical of your work, who will not hesitate to tell you that what you have just written is complete and utter crap and you need to rework it from the ground up. A circle, because you need different viewpoints. You, as a writer who is actually serious about getting a foot in the door of the industry, need to read everything you can get your hands on. And not just Forgotten Realms books, which you will need to read for yourself instead of relying solely on a mentor, but deeper into the genre and outside of it. You are a writer and writers are liars and thieves. We steal from everything, everyone, and everywhere and spin our lies into something that people might enjoy reading. The best thing to do, after you get to a point where you are comfortable showing your work to people who are more than willing to tear it apart, set it alight, and spit on the ashes--and you will have to get to this point--is joint a critique group.
