Right at the top of this list, I think, should be Judge Judy. Sometimes it seems like she just goes way too far on that show, abusing her authority as a TV judge. Anybody in her position ought to know better than to call people names that she or he would not tolerate from anyone else. If you want people to respect you, it seems that the most logical thing to do is to lead by example, wouldn't you think? Judge Judy just doesn't seem to care one way or the other. Very unprofessional most of the time, and all these busy-bodies (my wife included) just eat it up! It's always funny as long as we're not the ones on the receiving end of that kind of treatment. I just think it's atrocious, to put it mildly, that she should be allowed to continue in this way, or that she should be televised at all. I told my wife that one of these days Judge Judy is gonna cross the wrong person, and her position as a judge is not going to save her, particularly if someone catches her on the street!
Another show I think needs to be cancelled is Maury. He's a pretty cool guy and all, but his show appears to be geared largely toward drama queens and nosey people with no apparent lives of their own. I mean, why should I care if some guy I've never met before is the father of some obnoxious woman's child? All that drama isn't even necessary in the first place! Why go through all those antics in advance, when obviously one or the other is in for a rude awakening once the DNA test results are read?! Why not just wait for Maury to read the results, and then jump up and down and do the I told you so dance? Wouldn't it make more sense to just come out on stage like decent human beings, stating that the only thing needed in this instance is for the test results to be read, and take it from there? Judas Priest man, I can't understand why my wife and hundreds of thousands of other viewers can even get into this kind of crap!
Jerry Springer is another one, although I think his show did actually take a plunge at one point, I'm not sure. But anyone on the street doing the kind of things that these people get away with doing on stage would be awarded a one-way ticket to jail in no time flat. Society has enough problems already without encouraging this kind of behavior on television. Minding your own business is a virtue. But these days it seems that everybody just loves to stick their noses where they don't belong. Shows like these do nothing at all to discourage that kind of mentality; quite the opposite, in fact.
Other shows deserving dishonorable mention are Steve Wilkos, Judge Joe Brown, Judge Alex, and a few others I can't remember right now. This is not to say that the hosts of these shows don't make valid points during the course of any given episode, it's just that the premise of each show is based on issues that have nothing to do with the vast majority of their viewers. Every last person watching this crap has his own life to live, or her own issues to conquer, without worrying about what kind of dirt someone else happens to be covered with. On another note, I have long suspected that some of these people are just actors, airing out fake dirty laundry for the sake of being on television. While there's no way to be sure of that, obviously, I still can't help but to look on with utter contempt.
The only reason I even watch from time to time is because my wife wants to watch these shows, and it's just common courtesy to share. More often than not, though, when she is watching one of these crappy shows (and especially if/when there's nothing else on TV at the time), I find a reason to get up and walk out of the room. You know. Check the fridge, see if we need anything from the store. That kinda thing.
