It is odd how so many people think that sites like Facebook and Twitter have to be used solely to update your friends and followers on what you are doing and where you are at any given time. I have a Facebook account, but I mostly use it for posting random thoughts or automatically linking the blog posts I publish. I use twitter to promote my blog and track my favorite authors and bloggers, and the rest of the publishing industry. Not only do I receive news before it becomes widely available, most of the time there are conversations about the state of the genre, publishing, and the genre community.

There is museum, I forget which one, which is tweeting updates about WWII as if it were happening now. An author I follow on Facebook writes short fiction on whatever is laying about and takes pictures, posting them for people to read. Charlie Huston, author of several fine books and comics, uses Twitter to write and broadcast stories one snippet at a time.

Thing is, Facebook and Twitter goes beyond their stereotypical uses. Another author I follow just wrote a short guide to using Twitter, in which he outright states that updating your location and goings on is not appreciated and frowned upon. Do people use it for that? I am sure there are some who do, and use Facebook for the same thing, but I don't follow those people. You don't have to either. Nor do you have to do that. Post what you like, when you like. You don't have to tell anyone what you are doing or where you are if you don't want to.
