Thanks for opening this one!
As if on queue from my post ^_^ I would like to begin, as I believe I should, by saying you are probably my favorite fantasy novelist. Weis and Hickman get their spot with you on the top but that's about it for me. The writing of both characters and action is amazing, and the creativity with both is superb. Something that many authors cannot claim (being creative for me is to be able to avoid the "obvious" conclusions which the reader and even yourself are expecting from each scene/character/book). As for questions: 1. First of all, RAS (how do you prefer to be called? oh well), I was curious if your philosophical character of Drizzt - and I think that it's probably the most important thing about Drizzt as a character - stands similar to yours? I take every new "part" in your books, with Drizzt talking and explaining his feelings and motives, as a small-philosophical debate, one that Drizzt takes with the reader just as much as with himself, and I enjoy them quite a lot (even though I am utterly disagreeing on the opinions that you show there) you seem to put a lot of good self-doubts in the character and in the philosophy that it holds. As a Nietzsche reader I can only appreciate doubting oneself and trying to see through one's own masks (and Drizzt/you do it a lot). 2. Are you planning to continue Entreri's character? I was surprised that he left Jarlaxle alone at the end of RotP - even though character wise it fits wonderfully because Entreri got twice as wise and thrice as strong (from my personal view) since he joined the traveling Jarlaxle. Their combo is just so fun to read, and you do write them marvelously. I haven't managed to get my copy of "The Ghost King" yet and so I can't comment much on Jarlaxle's continued growth, but a solo Entreri book (about his struggles with himself, with the hate and with the surrounding world) would be most appreciated. I can say that I find many similarities between myself and Entreri and thus I wish to see him keeping his unbelieving spirit (of everything!) while growing up to use it for his own good in a world as confusing as the realms. First love shouldn't be last love, and if he could find a woman which he didn't hurt she might teach him even more wisdom than Jarlaxle had taught him. 3. When will Drizzt become less goodie-tooshoo? (I got no clue how to really spell that term). It was a great character to learn the childhoods morals with, but overall I think he should have grown up much more by now (especially after Innovindil's death). Even more so after the last book (which I haven't read yet but heard some nasty things about! Nasty is a good thing!!), 4. Can we get a whole book about Zak? He was such a great character and a full book about him in Menzo would be welcome (especially if that same book will detail both him and Jarlaxle and his evil mother). I know there's a short story coming (or so I heard) but I truly wish for a full book to tell their story(ies). 5. Why's Drizzt even comparing himself to Entreri in all those books? Considering the history of both Drizzt (in my humble opinion) had the easier way to "good" morals. It's much easier to live in a pure evil world and seek some light in it, hoping that it exists, than knowing there's light all around you but it's all fake (like Entreri's environment, which has many "normal" good people but in Entreri's mind and experience were all really fake and evil) - as evidence, even Entreri changed his views quite alot, and his actions, after his visit to the Drow city. Entreri was used to being surrounded by lies about people's nature, Drizzt was only used to lies about the plots around him. Entreri was forced out in a kick from the candy store while he saw other kids eating chocolate, Drizzt had no chocolate in his young world. To me it seems obvious who had the harder time (and that is Entreri). 6. You play WoW! That's amazing and fun to know. May I know what class (or classes) you play/been playing? Personally I'm a hard core warrior with a lot of other characters around (I actually moved from Night-Elf warrior to Orc mainly due to your books about Obould, which made me hate Orcs a bit less :P). Also played two mages, once in 60 and once in 70 - mages are the shizzle! -- Sorry if I asked questions you've answered before, I could not find time enough to run through all the past threads and sort out the questions I consider important from those that I don't

Three-quarterlings, a possibility? :)

Dazed Rambling The grandest adventures of our lives aren't about horses and swords and ghost cities lost to time. They are the choices we've made and why we've made them. Ehem. Just for any other wondering, he means a human-halfling child. And as far as I heard, there's already someone like that in the Realms. Question! After all the deal with the the flute, I was wondering if Artemis has a greater appreciation of music now. He was playing some great songs so I guess he would like to hear something similar. :P |

Afromania: Thanks for the kind words. I'min good company with Margaret and Tracy, to be sure.
1. It's Bob, by the way...readers always have to be careful not to project their feelings toward a character onto the author, or the actor for that matter. Certainly Drizzt or any of my heroes live by a philosophy that I find correct and endearing - else they wouldn't be my "heroes." That said, I'm always conscious that I'm writing these passages through the eyes of someone with very different experiences and circumstances than I. 2. Entreri's future is up in the air, as are the fates of most characters in the Forgotten Realms, as WotC advanced the timeline dramatically. I don't know what's coming for him, honestly. 3. Well, the thing of it is, if a "hero" crosses a certain line, there's no going back. Where that line is set is always the struggle of the storyteller. I remember a show called "boston Legal," about some lawyers. Dylan McDermott was the lead and in one episode, our protagonist tipped off a drug dealer about a raid adn a couple of cops got shot and killed. There was no going back from that; the show was effectively over. Regarding Drizzt...a "goody two-shoes"?...well, this goody two-shoes has killed dozens of people, so I'm not sure where else you would want me to go. 4. I've thought about it, but again, the Realms has moved far forward and we're not really looking back at this point. 5. I don't know what might be easy about growing up in Menzoberranzan, honestly. Murder and mayhem all around you, a brutal childhood and a position as a second-class person. That said, Drizzt uses other people to reflect on his own life and his own set of values. In that way, I guess we are somewhat alike after all! 6. I became the healer by default in WoW, so I'm playing a pally right now, healer/ret. The game is on the slide, I fear. Sargai: Well, they'd probabaly be called Threefourthlings or something in 4th edition... Yoski: Yeah, he's listening to George Winston. Really took the edge off... Peace, Bob |

I see that Laethyn asked you some questions about Copernicus in the other thread, so I won't ask much here, but I am VERY interested in hearing more about the game. I'm a big MMO fan, and with WoW beginning it's slide, I don't see any other games out right now that capture my interest. I've tried Warhammer, Everquest II and Age of Conan and none have held my interest at all. I have extremely high hopes that Copernicus proves to be that innovative new MMO that re-sparks the MMO genre. *Keeps fingers crossed* Anything you can reveal about the game would be much appreciated. Oh, and more Entreri....PLEASE!!! :) Me not nice Dino, me bash brains! |

Hello Mr. Salvatore! I'm an avid reader of yours and to find out I did join but never posted (I tried to sign up and discovered that fact!
). I've read nearly all of your books about Drizzt and company either
through those lovely fancy trilogy huge books (such as Icewind Dale) or the Collector's Edition (I manage to snag the first one). I've not yet picked
up Ghost King yet, but I'm most certainly going to soon!
I'm also happy to state that many books I own are the older cover editions that I snagged from either my early years or stores that sell old books. The one I go to here is called "Jellys" and its a gaming store that sells records (yes, before CDs existed records!), CDs, all sorts of table top games, comics, books and figurines. Anyhow, I live all the way in Hawaii and I'm bummed that I might not have a chance to meet you at all. In any event, I am curious if you're thinking of Drizzt and Artemis ever
crossing paths again? What will now become of my poor Artemis after his adventures with Jarlaxle? I'm sorry if you already answered these questions, but
I'm slowly trudging through the forums.
I am certainly looking forward to more! I don't have many friends so Drizzt and company, Artemis and Jarlaxle have become my friends over the years.

Bob, welcome back to the boards. :) You certainly don't visit enough.
I was Just thinking (and listening to the Graphic Audio recordings on my computer)...... I have purchased the first 6 installments from Graphic Audio (Demon Awakens & Demon Spriit) and can't get enough of them. You did well in getting that company involved. The only issue I have is that it takes a full three months to do a full book (1/3 book per month). Is it safe to assume that there are plans for Graphic Audio to do the other 4 books in the original Demon Wars Saga? Are there any plans for Graphic Audio presentations for our friendly neighborhood drow?
Chris

Bob,
I know you have been very busy, but it is good to see another interactive thread up and going. My question is, do you plan on attending GenCon in 2010? One of my favorite things (and one of my main reasons) in attending GenCon in the past was your hour long Q&A session you would hold. I have not been to GenCon since '06 unfortunately, so I am not sure if you still attend the convention. There is a good chance I may be going next year, however, and hopefully you would be attending and holding your Q&A session. Thanks and good to see you again! |

Hello Mr Salvatore :)
When i first discovered your books i read the entire Drizzt series in a couple of months and re-read most of them as they were so good, thank you for Drizzt :) I was eagerly awaiting The Ghost King and was very upset to find out it wasn't being released in the UK untill january Why is this?
Please don't make us wait so long for drizzt

[Hijack!]
CeNedra, just as I encourage US, Euro, and Aus members to use The Book Depository, I also encourage UK members to do the same. There are two sites, the UK site and the US site, that allow for easy and rather cost-effective importing of books from either country. The site offers free shipping around the world--or to most countries, rather, as there are some out of the way places that they will not ship to. If you were to buy The Ghost King from AmazonUK, it would be £13.44 and shipping, from The Book Depository it would be £8.38 (at the moment, as it has knocked some coinage off the price) and free shipping. Might take a little while longer to get to you, but it is better than waiting until January for a book you want to read. [/Hijack!] Threefourthlings... *sigh* making things easier for the new crowd. Frankly, D&D needs more fractions. We need 3/4lings getting with other 3/4lings, then a mix of 1/2lings. Eventually I want to see the elusive 1/8lings. Like no one else wants to see the child of a 1/2 elf 1/2 halfling who mated with a 1/3 human 1/3 dwarf 1/3 giant , who happened to the be son of a human and a 1/2 dwarf 1/2 mountain giant. And then you have to wonder at the potential for a (obviously false, but amusing unless there is the Ye Olde Paternity Teste) 2/1ling, though that might be a bit beyond family friendly.
"At least."

hope u read this xD.
i really really really want the transition books since i read every book there is from u. but i will only buy them in a gifset since i got every book about drizzt in gift sets. i just think that it looks cooler in a glass shelf in those cool boxes rather than having all books next to each other without those gift set boxes. i think many others think the same and are eagerly waiting for the transitions gift set with a new cool box and 3 new cool awsome books of yours. am checking amazon a lot lately since i'm from germany to see if there are some in there yet but getting nothing about a giftset yet since there probably is none yet for the trilogy. i didnt even want to start the trilogy yet since there is no gift set box and am waiting a half year now or longer to finally start those 3 books. yours sincerely danny a big drizzt fan xD |

Keep in mind that with book 3 just coming out, it might take a bit before the trilogy is released in boxed gift set.
