07/03/09 4:33 PM	Tags : None Okay, forgive my ignorance, but I need help. The only Forgotten Realms novels I've read are RAS' Drizzt books. I'm dying for some new reading material. What are the best of the rest of the Forgotten Realms? Is Dragonlance worth reading? And if so, which author is best? I read on these RAS Forums that Drizzt is now owned by Wizard's of the Coast (WotC). How does this affect future Drizzt stories? Or future Jarlaxle/Entreri novels for that matter? Are WotC affiliated with Forgotten Realms? As you can see, I am very confused. Thanks for your time!! :) 52% of the American electorate have just been "Hope-a-doped"! 07/03/09 5:20 PM Mr. Sargai	Drizzt has never been owned by Bob, it was first owned by TSR, which was later bought out by Wizards of the Coast. Wizards of the Coast, which is owned by Hasbro, owns several things, of which the Forgotten Realms, Eberron, and DragonLance are included. As for the future of Drizzt/Jarlaxle/Useless, that depends on whether or not Bob continues on with his contract, which has only two novels left to it: The Ghost King and another novel to be released after that. Most people will recommend Paul S. Kemp's novels, but I do not read the Realms beyond Bob's books and can't recommend anything. I read about thirty pages (if that) of a DragonLance novel and returned it to the library. If you are looking for new reading material there are books outside the Realms, but since you have read Feist, then you already know that. If you are looking for something light to read, I suggest picking up The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks. "At least." The grandest adventures of our lives aren't about horses and swords and ghost cities lost to time. They are the choices we've made and why we've made them. And the greatest treasures in our lives aren't the sleeping vaults beneath moon-misted ruins or the treasure mounds of flaming dragons. They are the people we have loved and been loved by along the path of our choices.

07/03/09 7:47 PM	I recommend: Paul S. Kemp: Erevis Cale Triliogy Paul S. Kemp: Twilight War Trilogy Savatore: The Cleric Quintet Avatar Series, 5 books total by various authors. War of the Spider Queen, 5 books total by various authors I enjoyed the Ed Greenwood, Elminster novels too but not everyone enjoys Greenwoods writing. You can also try picking up one of the various books that contain short stories and see if you can find a particular author that you like. Realms of the Underdark, Realms of War, Realms of Valor are a few examples. If you've read a significant amount of Drizzt books, then you can pretty much jump into any Forgotten Realms book and move right along with it. I'm reading the Dragonlance novels right now and I am highly enjoying them. Read the Weis and Hickman stories first. The first trilogy you should read to start out with is The Dragonlance Chronicles. The Erevis Cale trilogy was excellent, as is the continuing twilight war. Before reading those, read "Halls of Stormweather(Cale's story)" and "Shadow's witness", which are the first 2 Cale stories. Twilight war may be a bit difficult to understand if you do not get some backstory on the Archwizards, but any of us can explain that briefly. Other than that, I recommend Elaine Cunningham's "Songs and Swords" books. Book 1 is called "Elfshadow" and focuses on her main heroine Arylyn Moonblade and her hero and hilarious dilettante Danilo Thann. However, the main prize of this book is a first glimpse of Elaith Craulnober. Probably my favorite character in all of the realms. I always envision a meeting between him and Jarlaxle because they are much alike, albeit different. Book 2 is called "Elfsong"and focuses much more on Elaith.

I recommend you read the Erevis Cale books in this order. Sembia Gateway to the Realms: The Halls of Stormweather book 1 (a series of short stories and 1 story features Cale) Sembia Gateway to the Realms: Shadow's Witness book II The Erevis Cale Trilogy 1. Twilight Falling 2. Dawn of Night 3. Midnight's Mask The Twilight War 1. Shadowbred 2. Shadowstorm 3. Shadowrealm Here is a few other suggestions from me: The Avatar Series (By various authors) 1. Shadowdale 2. Tantras 3. Waterdeep 4. Prince of Lies 5. Crucible: The Trial of Cyric the Mad The Elminster series by Ed Greenwood 1. Elminster: The Making of a Mage 2. Elminster in Myth Drannor 3. The Temptation of Elminster 4. Elminster in Hell 5. Elminster's Daughter War of the Spider Queen (By various authors) 1. Dissolution 2. Insurrection 3. Condemnation 4. Extinction 5. Annihalation 6. Ressurection Sembia Gateway to the Realms: The Halls of Stormweather book 1 - The best story in this, is the Cale story. Most of the others are ok and one or two are a real drag to suffer through. If RAS chooses not to renew with WotC then, I guess that means he is not permitted, legally, to write more Drizzt.....? Wow. Helps me understand better one of the posts from Bob where he mentioned, it was an end of an era for him and he had tears in his eyes whilst writing "The Ghost King". So I guess this means WotC own Jarlaxle & Entreri too??? 07/04/09 9:34 AM	Hope they don't. Artemis and Jarlaxle can't be replicated by other authors... In anycase... I don't recommend the War of the Spider Queen Saga. It depressed me maybe more than the last Entreri book. I literally tossed the 4th book across the room. I kept reading hoping they would somehow fix the story, but it only goes downhill from there. Only recommended if you like dark heavy stories. In anycase, If you liked Drizzt you should read about Eleaine Cunningham's Starlight and Shadow series about Liriel... another Drow. Worth a read. Its Shared world fiction, and Greenwood and co were allowing anyone to use their NPC's(Khelben Blackstaff and Elminster have appeared in multiple books. Alustriel was used by Bob frequently, etc). The war of the Spider queen was excellent, and many different authors were given a chance to use many different established characters. Was it really so bad? No. It was excellent. Obviously nobody is going to write a book featuring them as main characters, but to use them as secondary characters would be completely acceptable as far as I am concerned.

Bob probably said that it's the end of an era for him in some part because WOTC wants authors to move on away from the 1300's century into the Spellplague and post-Plague time setting, which will involve leaving not just these characters behind, but each of their individual current storylines. That's gotta be a big lurch for any writer. We still don't know if this "end of an era" thing will just translate into a temporary break from Realms/Companions books for RAS, or basically a permanent finale (not including the rumored +1 Zak/Jar book). One more character we'll likely see biting the dust soon is . . .
