Hi Bob!
I'm a long-time fan of the Forgotten Realms, and Dragonlance, and I was wondering if you've seen the new Dragonlance movie? Any thoughts? What do you think of the Spellplague? Thanks for your time! I think it's awesome that you answer directly to your fans!

Hey RAS, I know in chat tonight you said Brotherhood of the Lost is pretty much lost. Are there any plans of getting other writers to write novels set in
Corona for Tor (or any other publisher)?
Also, I'm not sure how much reading you get to do, but do you have any favorite new author that have released books in the past year or two?

first things first i need to add my voice to those chanting for more jarlaxle.
secondly you made a point in saying how elves think long term do you think the recent trasition of time periods in the realms will allow you to showcase this aspect of your longer lived characters? or do you think its better to show shorter conflicts for a heightened sense of "human" drama? when you were writing entreri did you research people with alexithymia/disaffectation? I found his journey through his past very similar to how one would treat this psychologically with jarlaxle acting as his therapist. was this done purposely or am i just over analysing? to borrow a metaphor if the forgotten realms is ed greenwoods sandbox the part underneath it that the sun never touches is yours. how much say if any were you given as to what transpired in the underdark over the past 100 years? and with the recent passing of some fantasy icons i want to take this moment to thank you for all of the enjoyment ive had reading your work over the years. when people pass on i think we tend to regret the things we didnt say and because of threads like these i have that opportunity to say thanks and i wish you many years of good health and great writing.

Hey Bob! A big hello from Oz!
i have been a long time fan but this is my first ever interactive thread!! First i want to say 'thank you' for your awesome books. They got me back into reading, and enjoying, novels after i finished high school. I have a few qns: 1) Are you looking forward to writing in the post-spellplague world? Will each of the future books in the Transitions series contain more previews into the post-spellplague world? 2) If a movie were to be made of one of your books would you like to have some input into the production of it, and what kind of input? What would you think would be the limiting factor in the movie being successful if it is made? (sorry if this kind of qn has been asked before :) ) 3) Being an elec. engineer i just have to ask this :) I remember reading that you originally started your college days in Comp Sci. Does that little bit of experience/understanding in developing software add any useful insights for you in your work with 38 Studios? Cheers, Rob

Ahoy there, matey! I'm no longer "nuked_for_import"!
I'll fire off a The Orc King question, to start. In case you haven't noticed yet, I've been a little ticked off with the whole Many-Arrows invasion of the North. I want to lead the "Obould Must Die!" bandwagon. "[A]ll Obould deserves is an axe to the skull, a hammer to the chest, a scimitar to the gut, a mace to the toes, and an arrow to the butt!" A lot of that was based on my focus on factual information available to our heroes, as opposed to Drizzt's and Alustriel's apparent faith in a new turn in the war. Bad word, that--"faith"--in my dictionary. Q: So could you maybe explain it in a way that could break through my crusty exterior? Or does one simply--*gulp*--gotta have a faith, a faith, a faith? (And thanks again for that other matter, whichever way the wind blows . . .

And if I may offer some assistance in response to Darius's question above . . .
I (perhaps generously) chalk the inconsistency in tales of Artemis's past up to the distorting effects of psychological trauma. Sometimes that leads to repressed memories, or misremembered memories, or neurosis, or psychosis--or even all of the above. Specifically, Artemis may have misremembered his past because some part of him would rather believe that he had worked his way out of his problems, rather than just lucking out of them, or being sent away from them. It would serve him well in his mission to master the streets of Calimport if he were somehow led to believe that he had taken his fate into his own hands, and mastered his own destiny, by running away from home and finding a new place to live. That would feed right into his fantasy that he was in complete control of his emotions later as an arch-assassin. It could be a bit of internal self-reinforcing, self-edifying revisionist history on his part. Artemis shook that memory from his head, refusing to follow its inevitable course. He had survived the caravan trek and had stolen away from the merchants on the second day in Calimport, soon after he had learned that they had taken him along ultimately to sell him into slavery. As that short story unfolds, we are told that Entreri didn't really want to fully remember his early childhood. He was trying to wipe it away in one fell swoop, and replace it with a new vision of himself. If he got the basic issue of being-sold-into-slavery versus running-away wrong, then it is conceivable that he could've also gotten the precise ages and years mixed up, as well: Now he was a young man, fourteen years old--or almost fourteen. Artemis didn't remember his exact birthdate, just that there had been a brief period right before the even briefer season of rain, when times in his house were not so terrible. But Idalia's flute changed all that: Still watching the departing man, and rolling the discarded hat in his hands, Jarlaxle answered, "[...] Artemis has been forced to remember his past, and so now he has to confront the truth of who he is." (bolded added; Road of the Patriarch, C24)This leads me to conclude that ROTP presents the correct, truthful version of his past, and not "TTL". How does that sound?

Hey, Beast, like I said, I would be fine with that if AE didn't act like a much younger kid when he was sold to the caravan by his mother. The fact
that some of the events related in TTL were a fantasy created by AE himself in order to survive doesn't mean there can be some elements of truth in it,
like his age at the moment. That line in RotP could just be a mistake easily fixed in later editions OR, as far as we know, both could be wrong.

Darius wrote:But I don't recall him acting young at the time he was sold. Sure, he was sleeping on the dinner table a few months before that, which certainly made him sound small in size. But when he was sold, he just repeatedly asked his mother questions, to no avail. Maybe the closest thing I could think of that made him seem young when sold was that he called her "Mama-hal", which sounds kinda childish to me. But hey, I can chalk that up to him being from a different culture, and not necessarily him being really really young, there. The fact that some of the events related in TTL were a fantasy created by AE himself in order to survive doesn't mean there can be some elements of truth in it, like his age at the moment.Right. A person can misremember some things because of psychological trauma while still remembering other things perfectly well. Maybe he chose to remember himself leaving Memnon at age nine in "TTL" because it made him feel more proud that he was supposedly able to survive on the streets of Calimport even from that young of an age. Maybe lowering his age in his mind just helped to prop up his ego that much more. That line in RotP could just be a mistake easily fixed in later editions OR, as far as we know, both could be wrong.True. Certainly could be. And that would take an easy-enough fix, too. At any rate, it's something that either one of us probably would've caught and quizzed Bob about before sending it to the printer. We would've pressed for just a little more info to rectify the apparent inconsistency. Regardless, because we're told that the flute has caused Artemis to confront the truth, that still makes me think that ROTP's version of events is the correct one, and not "TTL". Anyway, while you are it, wasn't there another matter we had agreed you were going to ask RAS on the next interactive thread? I believe it was about or related to your interpretation of RAS's previous reply to me about the sacrifice of third living sons. I honestly don't remember exactly and I don't have the time atm to search the old threads, knock yourself out.Yeah, but let's just saddle Bob with one controversy at a time, woman! And I only suggested that "somebody" or the collective "we" should run that past him--not "I". Besides, I have more confidence that I'm right when it comes to this issue (Enteri's age), so that other one can wait! EDIT: Aw, Hells. Here is the <old thread>. Basically, Bob, the question was why third living drow sons are killed. The majority concensus seemed to be that it simply is always done--they're always killed. But my response was that that is not a reason why, but merely a time when. So I theorized that they are killed in order to secure or maintain Lloth's favor in some house agenda (especially inter-house rivalries), and cited all sorts of quotes from the novels and the sourcebooks to back that up. The majority seemed to think it was simply because it was a custom or tradition. Might the answer be that they do it for Lloth's blessing, and because it has worked in the past, it has thenceforward become a custom or tradition? Maybe some historical anecdote could explain both the practical reason for it and the traditional status that it has now attained within drow culture.

Hey this is TJ from Kansas City! I was glad to finally get a chance to meet you at your last book signing to our area, and have all the books that I got signed sitting in a nice stack next to my computer as we speak! (Go Chiefs, sorry we didn't beat Indy, at least the Pats got their 16-0 during the regular season) Well, to the task at hand. Questions!
3. How is the next novel for Drizzt going? Also, I haven't gotten a chance to read the Ancient (though I have it) but I'm excited to get started. I'm having to read some Faulkner (As I Lay Dying and Sactuary) right now, but its good stuff too. I'm excited to tackle the Saga of the First King, since Demon Wars was the best fantasy series I've ever read. (Kudos to you in my book!) Have a good one, and good luck sorting out what you have to! Scimitars High, to steal a nice catchphrase from the master o' catchphrases (I mean c'mon, you made "Ho ho What" and "Oi Oi" badass!)

Hope what's needing sorting gets sorted.
Kudos on the growth of 38. I watch with amazement as the talent pool grows at that company and it's simply astounding. The discussion over at 38fans.com is slow, but steady. Also, I don't know if you saw in the General Discussion area, I posted a note regarding Mr. Gygax. My condolences on the loss of a friend. A friend to us all, really. And now the loss of Arthur C. Clarke also. I don't think the world would be the same without those two. As to a question: How is it working with your kids on the various projects over the last couple of years? We've got Demonwars stuff, 38 Studios, SPOOKS, a new Realms novel, etc. etc. You must be an extremely proud parent!

Hey Bob got a question from SoCal. So with your wizards contract winding down what is the odds that we can lock you away and make you tuen out nonstop corona
novels? Or do you think the 38 studios Ip is going to be your big project because I can see constntly writting new content and stories for a evolving world to
be exhausting and time consuming.

And going off the question that Titahs posed:
the 38 Studios IP is going be a huge thing with all of the various products. Can we hope to see a "Copernicus" novel with R.A. Salvatore's name on it in the future?

I am (as my name implies) a fan of the Sea Sprite and all her motley crew. I was wondering what the chances are of ever seeing them in your pages again as more than just a casual reference? Aside from that, I hope all is well with you and yours! Thanks for being bad ass! -Danie ~*~

Hi Bob,
Long time, no chat. I hope all is well with you and your family. More Entreri! Sorry, had to throw that out there yest you forget just how popular everyone's favorite assassin is. My questions revolve more around 38 Studios and the MMO you all are working on. How is it going? Is it taking the shape you personally thought and hoped
it would? I'm a huge fan of World of Warcraft, but I'm starting to yearn for something new. While I love WoW, it really isn't a revolutionary
game. It took what EQ did before it, polished it up, and tightened some of the loose screws and became a phenomenal hit, but didn't really re-define the
genre. Do you think your game will present truly fresh and new ways to explore a MMO?

It has been a while since I read Spine of the World, but it wasn't too long ago that I finished Fritz Leiber's Ill Met in Lankhmar*. It has been said
that you are a fan of Leiber, so, I guess I'll ask my question, which has probably been asked before, but I don't follow these threads regularly.
Was there any influence from Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser in the pairing of Wulfgar and Morik? *White Wolf's edition, which contains the first two books. Sargai: Yes, dear.

I have a small question for Mr. Salvatore:
Are there currently any plans in the future for you to release a "Best of the Realms" anthology? If so, would it be a safe guess that there might be new stories as well as the previously published short stories? I would suppose (perhaps naively) that the hypothetical anthology would be a good venue for new stories about the supporting characters in your Realms novels such as To'sun, Pikel, Zaknafein as well as anything new for the Companions of the Hall, Artemis and Jarlaxle. Thank you in advance for any answer you might post. |

RA thanks for being so busy and turning out good work as always. Have you had any time to read Terry Brooks newest series? He really seams to be having a good
time bridging the gaps between his word void series and Shannara. Any chances in this newest Corona series that we find out that the Isle Bedwydrin is located
somewhere off the coast? Branson meets Oliver would crack me up, I could be wrong.
