I was scoping out some posts over in "Other Authors" and came across this interesting line at the end of one of them. The particulars of the situation are unimportant.
Edited for language: Beezer
It did say Edited by: BeezerMN at: 3/28/06 6:43 pm at the bottom of the post, so I am certain that it was not a joke by the post's original author.
I reread the post, trying to look for obvious indications that it had been "edited for language." Things like:
"Well, you stupid son of a [deleted], if you didn't have your head so far up your [deleted] you would have known that the poison on Donnia's crossbow bolts wouldn't have as much effect on Drizzt as it did on Tarathiel and Innovindil. Dumb[deleted]!"
But it didn't look like that at all. It seemed to flow perfectly, seamlessly, with no obvious signs of deletion. This got me thinking ... as I seem to remember this board has a filter that is supposed to give you one of those ^&%$#* things when you use inappropriate language. This leads me to believe that the mods are finding it necessary to edit posts above and beyond what should occur automatically. So personalities become involved and the entire process becomes rather arbitrary. Any form of editing OTHER than the sort that I demonstrated above, where you merely remove the offensive word but leave the rest of the written material intact (if somewhat butchered) means that the "editor" runs the risk of changing the context of the author's post.
That is unacceptable.
Worse, and the main reason for starting this thread, I find it offensive ... HIGHLY offensive ... to imagine these board "editors" getting into my post, my written material, my intellectual property as it were, and changing, rewriting, revising or deleting portions of it. I think that is wrong. I think they should delete the entire post rather than attempt to present it in any form other than the form in which it was originally presented. You should just see:
Post deleted for language: Beezer
That way, the "editors" won't be taking liberties with what I've written and I, if I want to be read, will adhere more strictly to whatever language guidelines that particular "editor" wishes to enforce.
Anybody disagree with that? And let's not even go there ... I'm not ranting about Beezer or the rules or freedom of speech. I'm saying the mods shouldn't be able to alter posts. They should delete them entirely.
