Far be it from me to discourage anyone from reading RAS's books again, but no, we've never been told that Pinochet is dead. The last we heard of him,
- THG, P2:C14: As his ship approaches Memnon, Deudermont tells the Companions that, because of politics, he has made a deal with the captured
Pinochet that the pirate captain and his crew will later be released on the condition that they will no longer bother the Sea Sprite. Pinochet is
to be interrogated by the Calimshan Navy in the coming days, and the pirate's remaining ship will require much time for repairs.
- THG, P2:Epi.: Days later, Pinochet is still detained in the ship's hold in Memnon, waiting for Captain Deudermont to release him. He begs
LaValle to rescue him, to no avail.
- PTD, P1:C1: Deudermont had indeed let Pinochet go free. Reportedly he had set the pirate ship adrift outside Memnon, and the pirate's first mate, the sea troll Carrackus, had rescued him. But the pirate associates of Pinochet had not held to the deal, and had begun a violent spree on the sea. The Sea Sprite chased and captured Carrackus' ship, though Pinochet himself was not aboard.
