The Mayans had lots of calendar-type documents. The one that is referred to most often is only one of many. Just because it ends in 2012 doesn't really mean anything, when there are still lots of other calendar-type documents to consider. Clearly, the Mayans did not think that the world would end in 2012. That's just when that particular calendar ended.

It's like having last year's modern-day calendars end in Dec., 2011. If someone holds onto such a calendar for posterity, or maybe for legal reasons, then future generations shouldn't somehow conclude that you were ever under the impression that the world was ending on 31 Dec., 2011. The mere fact that your calendar ended then doesn't imply that you thought the world would, too.

The same applies here.

That's how the other calendar-type documents change the theory.

However, much like with the Bible, I wouldn't base any important decisions on the other Mayan documents any more than I would on the more famous one. They're all silly religious junk to me.

It's always been about one age ending, and another beginning. Heck, this actually is more solid evidence pointing to something occurring as people have predicted.

p.s. I don't believe any of it, but when people talk about the Mayan Calendar theory, they more often than not have it wrong.

But getting to the end of one calendar or "age" never meant any real "change". It just meant it was time to start a new calendar. When you get to the end of a month and flip the page to the next month, or when you get to 31 Dec. on a modern calendar and open a new calendar up to 01 Jan.; it's largely an academic, abstract, procedural thing--it doesn't mean that any particularly dramatic change has come. People like to treat the New Year as a time for making changes in their lives, but we know that that is an artificial, unsustainable tradition for the overwhelming majority of people.

I smell snake oil salesmen. Peeps were wanting to sell doomsday crap, and the Mayan calendar may pretty window dressing for the credulous.
