Which book or series should I read first? |

I was just introduced to the works of R A Salvatore and am wondering which book or series I should read first!

I'd recommend The Crystal Shard. It was RAS's first published novel, and it started the whole long series of Drizzt books. He introduced his
most famous characters there, and it has nostalgic value for me something fierce.
Later, he went back and wrote a prequel trilogy, beginning with the book Homeland (similar to what was done with the Star Wars movies). As this book tells of Drizzt's birth and childhood, many readers prefer to start with it. But I like TCSh more, since RAS's signature character Drizzt Do'Urden was unveiled for the first time there, and his background is pretty mysterious in that book. It is because of that fact that RAS went back and wrote the prequel trilogy, to fill in the gaps. It's fun to read TCSh and the next few books (check out the scrolling list in the top righthand corner of every page here in the forums) with Drizzt's background being mysterious like that. It draws you into the drama of the fundamental question: just who the heck is this guy who looks so devilish but hangs out with goodly folk? On the other hand, if you start with Homeland, all of that stuff is answered for you up front, and it kinda spoils the mystery in TCSh, etc.

I would recommend the Demon Wars! Clearly his best 7 book series....and a lot of fans here totally agree with that assessment.
At least look into it. Demon Awakens Demon Apostle Demon Spirit Mortalis Asendence Transcendence Immortalis Great series and one you will enjoy from the beginning to the end.

**As quoted by RAS** No matter any of that, to be a published writer is to know with certainty that no matter what you accomplish, no matter how you touch some people, there will always be plenty of people out there more than happy to tell all the world how much you suck. |

I think you should read Homeland first. It makes the most sense.

Don't get me wrong.....The Dark Elf books are great, but if you want a truely work of art, it would have to be the Demon Wars. The Demon Wars is a place
Bob made up himself and had done a great job in character creation and history of his realms....his magic....his creaturea.
As for the Dark Elf series, I would start at the beginning...Homeland.

Nanron LOUM wrote:Oh, I totally recommend those, too. I just thought it might be better to start with something else first, and then work one's way up to "DemonWars". It's quite a bit more heady series than everything else RAS has written. (Though I think RAS is kinda bridging the gap, a bit, between the Drizzt books and the "DemonWars" books with this latest Drizzt mini-series, "Transitions".)

Let me revise my recommendation...
If you are over the age of 15 try reading the Demon Wars. If you are under the age of 15 read the Dark Elf books. All the books are great, it's just that the Demon Wars is more of an adult read with a great story.

I don't turn 15 until the 27th of this month...should I have put off reading that fantastic series, just because I hadn't been alive the appropriate
amount of days?

I dont think Nanron meant any insult by the recommendation. I am well over 15 but I enjoyed the Dark Elf books much more than the Demonwars books. Having said
that, I agree with Nanron and his statement is probably true in most cases.

I have to agree with Lae. The Crimson Shadow novels remain amongst my favorite of Bob's novels.
"At least."
The grandest adventures of our lives aren't about horses and swords and ghost cities lost to time. They are the choices we've made and why we've made them. And the greatest treasures in our lives aren't the sleeping vaults beneath moon-misted ruins or the treasure mounds of flaming dragons. They are the people we have loved and been loved by along the path of our choices. |

Assuming he was not being sarcastic, I think this is just a case of 15 year old pride. We've all been there.
